Alight, S Mark Gubb
- DateCompleted December 2014
Co-founder of Public Artist Ltd. and then director of developer, Stoford, Jon Andrews appointed EMP Projects to procure public art associated with this Cardiff City centre headquarters building, prelet by Stoford to Admiral Insurance. The artist S Mark Gubb proposed an iconic sculpture that would act as a landmark and reflect the vibrant nature of Cardiff and the Admiral business. Jon worked closely with Mark and Emma Price of EMP Projects to deliver this large scale artwork. Continuous consultation and careful management of the process with the fabricators, building contractors, City Council and eventual owner of the building, Union GmbH, produced a final piece that realised the aspirations of the artist within the tight constraints of a city centre location.
The technical challenges of fabrication and installation of the work were significant. Final ownership of the artwork and hence liability for maintenance became a key issue as completion of the work approached. This was eventually resolved by the occupier of the building taking responsibility for the long term care of the work.
